The 2012 Horsham Lions scholarship application is now available.

If you are a Hatboro-Horsham HS student, please remember that you must be a resident of Horsham Township to apply.

The amount and quantity of scholarships varies each year. This year, three scholarships are available: the Hankin Scholarship ($1000) is given in memory of Max and Janet Hankin, longtime Horsham residents and supporters. Without their generosity and the support of their family, these scholarships would not be possible; and two other scholarships ($750 each).

We are excited to induct two new members in December.

District Governor Paul W. Barndt, Sr. was on hand to perform the induction ceremony, which corresponded with our annual Horsham Lions Holiday Party.

This year, Otto's Brauhause (right next door to the Horsham Days Inn) catered our holiday event.

New Lions Joni Hazim and Alex Wray were surrounded by their family and new Lion friends as they joined the ranks of the World's Largest Service Organization.

Both members are excited to continue their community service as part of the Horsham Lions family.

Again this year, the Horsham Lions Club participated in the Horsham Chamber of Commerce toy collection.

New for the Chamber this year is that a local nonprofit organization, Concern 4 Kids, was the beneficiary of all chamber toy donations. Learn more.

2011 Horsham Lions Club Scholarship Winners

During a June 2011 ceremony, the Horsham Lions Club awarded a total of $2,500 in three different scholarships to 2011 high school graduates from Horsham Township.

And the winners are ...

Margaret “Claire” Murphy, an upcoming Virginia Tech student, earned the Horsham Lion Club’s $1,000 Max Hankin Memorial Scholarship. Murphy has volunteered for the Future Business Leaders of America and was her class vice president at Hatboro-Horsham High School. She also served on the student council and student advisory board. Outside of school, Murphy played soccer and danced. She's volunteered with youth groups and at Ronald McDonald House, Relay for Life, Philabundance, SPCA, and many other organizations.

Anthony Caporizzo, a La Salle College High School graduate, won a $750 scholarship and will attend Syracuse University this fall. Caporizzo said he plans on studying biomedical engineering and hopes to become a surgeon.

He's been a church youth group leader and was on the youth advisory board for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Caporizzo has been a Boy Scout for many years. In school, he was in the National Honor Society, and participated in varsity bowling and basketball. He was also the school's mascot for football games.

Caporizzo has made service trips to Bolivia (in 2009) and to a Navajo reservation in Arizona (in 2010).

“While in Bolivia we painted a house we raised money to build,” he said. “We also spent many hours in the hospitals playing with the orphaned children.”

Along with about 30 others, Caporizzo said he helped with building efforts in Arizona too. The team refinished a recreational gym so people would have a place to play indoors during the rainy season. Caporizzo and some friends also put a roof on a house and built a stone pathway to the door using stones collected from a mountain.

“This work helped me get along with other people,” he said. “I have always been independent, but having to work with other people and having to be able to trust them will help me in school and in the workforce.”

Matthew Jevit, who plans to attend Duquesne University this fall, won a Horsham Lions’ $750 scholarship. Jevit spent three and a half years working to reach the highly respected level of Eagle Scout, and has received numerous accolades via the Boy Scouts.

“I realize the importance of giving back to the community and, seeing that my troop is located in Hatboro, I organized the restoration of a section of York Road in Hatboro’s downtown area,” he said. “This included weeding, mulching and planting flowers around the trees on York Road.”

Jevit has also volunteered for Key Club and local soup kitchens. He is an altar server at his church, and has been a summer day camp counselor for four years. Jevit served as a guide for the National Youth Leadership Training, where he taught leadership to a small group of scouts. A lover of the natural sciences, Jevit said he wants to be a high school science teacher.

“I realize I like teaching people and I am probably better suited to teach rather than do field research,” Jevit said. “I figured that teaching was a way to enjoy the sciences, but still be active throughout the day.”

Dunk Tank VICTIMS Wanted!

The Horsham Lions Club is in need of VICTIMS to sit in our Dunk Tank on Horsham Day, June 4th.

Kids, wouldn't you love to dunk your teacher or principal?
Teachers, step in the tank as an incentive for your kids to do extra credit.
Officers, dunk your lieutenant!
Dunk your boss, neighbor, or mother-in-law!
Last year, you could dunk a lawyer!
Make a wager with a friend, the loser goes in the tank.

So here's what you have to do:

Membership Night!

Cow Plop Bingo Tickets Available!

The Nonprofit Roundtable in conjunction with the Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce will be conducting a Cow Plop Bingo at the next Horsham Day. All nonprofits who are members of the Nonprofit Roundtable are invited to participate in the planning and selling tickets, and may thus share in the proceeds.

What is cow plop bingo? Simple. A grid is laid out across an empty field. Bingo players purchase tickets, each assigned to a specific square on the grid. A cow is released onto the field. Wherever the cow “plops”, the ticket holder for that square wins!

Tickets are now available! Every $10 ticket holder has the chance to win $1,000 at one of three cow-plop events during the day.

LIONS: The fundraising profit from this ticket sale is potentially tremendous. For every $10 ticket you sell, the club will get back up to $9. What other fundraiser have we done where the profit margin is 90%? So come to the next meeting on January 6th, get a handful of tickets, and do your best to sell them!

Pride of Scottsdale Lions

We finally got around to emptying our eyeglass collection box located at the Days Inn front desk, and what do we find at the very bottom? We found a Lions business card left there by Lion Bill Keyburn from the Pride of Scottsdale Lions Club back in April!

Apparently Lion Bill had been a guest staying at the hotel in April, and saw our collection box. His note on the back of the card said he was sorry he missed our meeting. We’ve written to the Arizona club and thanked him for the surprise note left in our box.

NYT Article on Low Vision

A tip-of-the-hat goes to Lion Tom Burgess for bringing this New York Times article to our attention.

From the December 27th issue, comes an article titled “Just Because One’s Vision is Waning, Hope Doesn’t Have To”. It’s a very inspiring article encouraging those with vision problems to keep striving for solutions that work for them. There are many tools and tips that people simply don’t know about, such as injections or stem cell therapy. The medical community appears to do a lot to prevent or cure blindness, but little to assist those with low‐vision problems.

The article goes on to report that unfortunately, insurance coverage is lacking in the area of vision disabilities. Coverage and support is more available for veterans than for nonveterans.

We had 17 Lions in attendance, and with spouses the headcount came to more than 25. The room was tiny but we all got cozy and had a great time.

District Governor John Holland was our guest speaker. He came to praise us for continued growth, and introduce his governor’s project, providing needed “comfort supplies” for our troops in the Middle East.

Remembering Ron Mintz

It is with heavy heart that we must report that longtime Horsham Lion Ron Mintz passed away at his home on Friday, November 12th.

It was Ron's wishes not to have an obituary, funeral, or memorial service. There was no notice in the newspapers.

Ron was one of the founders of our yearly golf tournament, which has been a tremendous fundraiser over the years. He was also a member of the Horsham Park and Recreation board. He had been appointed by the Governor to serve on the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, and proudly served in that role for 25 years.

As you may know, he's been divorced from his wife Minna for some time. Ron had no children.

We've spoken with Hazel Downes, Ron's personal assistant and dear friend for 40+ years. Her grief is deep, and I'm sure your sympathy will be appreciated. She is compiling a collection of anecdotes, stories, memories, and photos of Ron, and asks that you contribute whatever you feel belongs in this collection. Send submissions to the Lions (contact information above), and we will make sure Hazel gets them.

Help us remember Ron for all the good works he did with joy and happiness.

Lions Provide Thanksgiving Dinners

White Cane Day 2010

White Cane Day was held on Saturday, November 6th at the Wawa in Horsham. We had overwhelming support this year, with upwards of 8 Lions working at the same time! What a change from years’ past!

We had our largest one-day collection ever on that day, thanks to the help of the Lions who came out to help. We handed out literature, coloring books, and even managed to interest someone in attending one of our meetings that day! Lions District Rally 2010

Kate Hentschel & Change for Children

Miss Kate Hentschel was our guest speaker at our October 21st meeting. Ms. Hentschel is a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School.

After spending several weeks as a patient in Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia last year, Kate realized how little there is to keep youngsters occupied while they are patients in the hospital.

She decided to start a fundraiser she calls “Change for Children”. The goal is to bring new books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, video games, and a computer for hospitalized teens to use at CHoP. This is her second year conducting this service.

The Horsham Lions so liked this idea and Ms. Hentschel’s determination and drive, that we voted to donate $200 to the young lady. The seeds of lifelong community service are evident in Ms. Hentschel. Her story was featured in the a Philly.com article, and is also recognized by CHoP.

Advanced Hearing Systems & Audibel

Representatives from Advanced Hearing Systems and Audibel were our guests at the October 7th Lions meeting. Pictured are Nancy Hilger and Pat Gilmartin. Ms. Hilger is a local representative for Audibel and Mr. Gilmartin is a regional representative. Audibel is a premier manufacturer of hearing aids, proudly serving patients for fifty years.

Mr. Gilmartin gave the club a very interesting presentation, starting with some basic facts and statistics about hearing loss in the US. Some interesting facts we learned:

65% of Americans with hearing loss are YOUNGER than senior citizen age
Only 14% of primary care physicians routinely screen for hearing loss
Hearing aids can correct tinnitus immediately, even in those without hearing loss
90% of hearing aid wearers report increased quality of life due to use

Mr. Gilmartin then went on to tell us how successful Audibel hearing aids have been in improving quality of life for those with hearing loss. The options and varieties of hearing aids are vast and varied. The functions available simply miraculous, thanks to nanotechnology and modern digital software.

He and Ms. Hilger have offered their advice, counseling, and service to those with hearing loss in our region. Ms. Hilger can be reached at 215-672-5041.

Horsham Nonprofits Collaborate to Help

The Horsham Lions Club recently received a request for aid from a local single mom living in Horsham. Her son needs a hearing aid and their insurance will not cover the total cost.

The Lions were willing to contribute, but could not cover the total cost. So we reached out to the other nonprofits in Horsham, via the Nonprofit Roundtable organized by the Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce. Could other nonprofits help contribute to cover the cost? Response was overwhelming. Not only did other nonprofits offer financial assistance, but private citizens also offered their help. Only three donors were needed to fill the gap.

Many thanks go to the Horsham Neighbors Association, neighbor Pete Choate, and a third donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

Since requests for aid do come in regularly, and since so many more donors came forward with offers for aid, there are certainly going to be more opportunities to collaborate to help the residents of Horsham!

Wellness Orientation Workshop

At our September 16th meeting we hosted Dr. Joe Greco, owner of Greco Family Chiropractic. “Dr Joe”, as he is commonly called, came to talk to the Lions about total overall wellness, and how chiropractic can help you achieve it.

The concept of wellness shouldn’t be thought of as purely a physical thing. Instead, wellness encompasses our habits, our behaviors, our emotions, our mental well-being, and the nutrients we put into our bodies.

Dr. Joe dispelled several commonly-held myths about chiropractic, and gave us an in-depth explanation of what chiropractic is and is not.

Instead of focusing on treatment of illnesses, as traditional medicine does, chiropractic aims to help you prevent illnesses in the first place, by changing your attitudes and habits, and by helping your nervous system to heal the rest of your body.

Most illnesses are preventable, says Dr. Joe. Why wait until an illness hits to take action? Taking control of your overall wellness now by learning healthy habits and a positive attitude, can reduce the likelihood of serious illness.

Remembering Bill Wunder

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Lion Bill Wunder on September 10th.

Bill received his 40th year of membership pin at the Hatboro Lions Club Charter Night this June. A few years earlier he was commended for bringing int 25 new members to the Hatboro Lions Club.

Bill is survived by his wife Lion Delores Wunder and his sons Robert, William, and Kurt.

The family is requesting contributions to the Hatboro Lions Club, PO Box 471, Hatboro PA 19040.

Bingo and a Movie Diabetes Fundraiser

At our July 1st meeting we had a brief visit by Mr. Don Dillon. He is the organizer of a yearly block-party-style fundraiser whose proceeds go to the American Diabetes Association.

The event, titled “Bingo and a Movie”, was held on August 7th this summer. Features included (naturally) bingo, and a surprise movie projected onto the side of a home. There were several local bands providing live music, and also a magician.

There were dozens of prizes donated for the event, including 5 Blu-Ray DVD players, gift certificates to many local restaurants and hotels, several rounds of golf, cameras, video game systems, three Apple iPods, and much more!

The Horsham Lions Club was there for the event, handing out literature and meeting the community. With help from District 14-R, we also conducted vision and hearing screenings on site. Interest in these from the community was very high. Due to the music and the sun, we weren't able to screen everyone, but we now know how important this is to parents, and we will be better prepared for next time.

White Cane Days

Each October the Lions hold White Cane Days fundraisers. The event was established in 1964 to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired, and the important symbol of blindness and independence, the white cane.

Benefits to this include meeting the community, spreading the word about Lions, and trying to find new members and sponsors.

We haven't yet set dates for the fundraiser this year. Check back for updates. We do hope to conduct our fundraiser outside Wawa as we have done in years' past. Acme is another viable possibility.

2010 Horsham Lions Scholarship Winner Kristina Wharton

Our sole 2010 scholarship winner is Miss Kristina Wharton, who attended Hatboro-Horsham High School. She and her parents visited our club during our July 1st meeting.

Kristina will be attending West Chester University this fall, studying nursing. She has already earned some college credits for nursing during her high school career.

Kristina has been very active in high school, participating in many sports, National Honor Society, and the Interact Club. She volunteers at Abington Memorial Hospital regularly.

Last winter, Kristina and a friend took it upon themselves to "adopt" a local family in financial need. They provided the family with Christmas gifts, for the children as well as the parents. They made sure the family had plenty of food for the holidays, and even helped decorate their home for the season.

Help us congratulate Miss Wharton and wish her continued success in her future.

2010 Hatboro-Horsham Golf Outing Recap

To the surprise of most of us, we did absolutely phenomenal this year. If you recall, we didn’t even have a golf outing last year, and the two years prior to that we did rather poorly.

All told, we earned about $2,200 after expenses. This editor cannot remember a success that great since his induction into Lions! This equates to 44 holiday dinners for Horsham residents in need, or more than 20 cataract surgeries for the poor in developing countries.

What made the difference? Certainly not the number of golfers. We only drew in about a quarter of the golfers we really wanted to see.

No, the big help came in the form of sponsorships from local businesses. Ten local businesses donated toward this event. All were given advertisements throughout the course.

Horsham Day 2010 Recap

A fun time was had by all at Horsham Day 2010. We sold more roast pork sandwiches than last year, and we sold ice cream novelties in place of water ice.

All told we earned just a smidgen less than last year. The day was hot, which probably turned away some visitors. We also were competing with carnivals or fairs in two neighboring communities on the same day. Regardless, we now have another $2,000 to put towards the community, and for that we should all be proud!

We also had more than a dozen helpers from the Hatboro-Horsham High School on hand, which allowed some of our hard-working Lions to take a break for a short while. High school volunteers we wish to thank:

Guest Speaker Marshall Gisondi, April 1, 2010

	At our April 1st meeting, we were visited by guest speaker Marshall Gisondi. Marshall is a vision‐impaired, professional piano tuner and technician. He was trained at the School of Piano Technology for the Blind, located in Vancouver, Washington. The school has been in place, educating the blind to repair and service pianos, since 1949.
	He educated us on the proper care and maintenance of pianos. It’s not as easy as it would seem! He explained the steps necessary to conduct a thorough piano tuning, and encouraged piano owners to hire professionals to move pianos, and not do it themselves. Marshall shared with us many anecdotes of his career. He also gave us a list of Do’s and Don’ts for piano care.

He told us about the school he attended, and how students are trained by touch and sound, instead of by sight. In some ways, using touch and sound is better than sight when it comes to pianos. The school teaches only vision impaired people, making it one of the few such institutions worldwide.

Remembering PDG David Porter

It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Past District Governor David C. Porter.

David was extremely active in Lions Clubs, and has served as sponsor, mentor, and friend for many Lions in our area, including several in the Horsham Lions Club. He will most certainly be missed by all who knew him.

David served as District Governor in California before moving to Pennsylvania. He also served 14-R as District Governor in 1987-88.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Pennsylvania Lions Sight Conservation and Eye Research Foundation, c/o PID Robert Miller, PO Box 6, Orwigsburg, PA 17961.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday morning March 6th, 2010 from 11:00am-12:00pm at the Chapel at Ann’s Choice Retirement Community, 30000 Ann’s Choice Way, Warminster, PA 18974

Meet Bill Huber, Cornea Transplant Recipient

On the night we visited the Hatboro Lions Club to talk about our upcoming golf outing fundraiser, we were thrilled to listen to Hatboro’s guest speaker for the evening, Bill Huber. Bill has the unique distinction of being a double cornea transplant recipient. He is extremely proud of the work that Lions have done, and is especially enthused about the work done by the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley.

When Bill was in his teens, he needed both of his corneas replaced. He was declared legally blind as he was just entering adulthood. His transplants were both done at the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley.

In 1980, there was a five-year waiting list for corneas. Today, there is no waiting list. In 1980, having a cornea replaced meant a three day recovery in the hospital, at the very least. Today the procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, although the doctor usually likes to see a patient stay overnight just in case of complications.

In 1980, when a donor cornea was available, there was just a tiny six-hour window of opportunity before the cornea was unusable. Today corneas can be kept valid for up to 14 days in the USA, and even longer elsewhere due to more relaxed requirements.

Bill tells us this is because of the advances in medicine that have been done thanks to Lions. A new kind of solution or “syrup” that keeps corneas “fresh” longer has made all the difference.

In addition, the Lions Eye Bank now employs the use of five “harvesting” vehicles, which are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to go retrieve corneas from donors when one becomes available.

Bill says he often gets discouraged when he sees people abuse their eyes, from excessive rubbing, and applying makeup. He encourages all of us to cherish our eyesight. As one who knows what blindness is like, and how life can be so vastly different when one’s eyesight is restored, Bill’s advice is wise.

He also encourages us to support the Eye Bank, and come tour it some day. The Eye Bank also trains and certifies doctors for cornea transplant surgery. The Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley is part of a network of eye banks nationwide, where the premiere doctors work miracles daily.

Bill tells us all to have no fear to go to the eye doctor, have no fear to go for an eye exam. It could make all the difference in the world to you. Did you know that corneas themselves have no blood vessels, meaning that there is no blood matching necessary between donor and recipient? That’s why the success rate of corneal transplants is over 98%.

Guest Speaker Juliet Whelan, February 4th 2010

During our February 4th meeting, we were pleased to host guest speaker Juliet Whelan. Ms. Whelan is part of Jibe Design, a Philadelphia-based contemporary architecture and construction firm. The company is committed to design excellence and environmentally friendly solutions. Their specialty (and Juliet's passion!) is sustainable architecture.

Also known as "green architecture", the discipline focuses on designs that:

Have the smallest possible impact on the environment
Employ reusable materials
Take great steps to reduce energy usage

Examples of sustainable architecture include:

Use of windows permitting ambient light instead of excessive interior lighting
Use of newer highly insulated glass and structural materials
Use of automatic-shutoff, motion-sensing interior lights
Designs that take the structure's location, orientation, and landscape into account

We sure learned a lot about architecture that evening. Coupled with a healthy dose of environmental responsibility, we all came away reminded about how we can make the world a better place even in our own living spaces.

Horsham Lions Membership Night

Many thanks to Lion Todd Tuckey for hosting our annual membership night at TNT Amusements this year.

About a dozen Lions came out for a fun night of pinball and arcade games, and we had about five guests who came to learn a little bit about Lions. Guest or Lion, all had a great time.

Guest Speaker David Galiani, January 7th 2010

Dr. David Galiani, local ophthalmologist, was our guest speaker at our January 7th meeting. Dr. Galiani and his colleage, Dr. Christine Smith, have both helped us help the blind in this area.

Drs. Galiani and Smith, along with Dr. Laura Walsh, operate Galiani Ophthalmology Associates in Doylestown. Dr. Galiani performed cataract surgeries for a local resident who could not afford them. He has offered his expertise to the Lions, should we find other local residents in need.

Many thanks to Dr. Galiani for educating us on the many functions of the eye and the many technologies available today to assist doctors in caring for our eyes.

Girl Scouts Collect Eyeglasses!

We only had one Girl Scout troop participate in Sight Night this fall, but that one troop did fantastic. Altogether, the small troop collected 227 pairs of eyeglasses for the Horsham Lions!

Hatboro Troop 73467, led by Jennifer Crosby, has participated with the Lions in Sight Night for four straight years now.

The Horsham Lions visited the troop, explained why we recycle eyeglasses, and explained how their effort will help people SEE. Join us in thanking Jennifer and her troop for their work!

White Cane Day Comes Early!

White Cane Day came early this year, because Wawa could only fit us in on September 19th instead of a date in October. Regardless, we earned several hundred dollars for White Cane charities, thanks to the help of Lions Tara Smith, Steve Girone, Jules Olita, and new member Bart Allgeier.

Helping Our Community

Just a few recent examples of how the Horsham Lions Club helps the community:

In August, we donated $150 toward the purchase of new eyeglasses for an Abington High School teacher's aid who could not afford them.
In September, we donated $200 to cover the co-pay for two cataract surgeries for an elderly Ambler woman.
Also in September, we donated another $100 toward the purchase of new eyeglasses for a disabled Norristown woman.

LIONS, this is the benefit that your efforts have given! FRIENDS, we cannot do this if we can't raise funds. Please support your local service organization!

Meet our 2009 Scholarship Recipients

In July 2009, the Horsham Lions Club presented $750 scholarships to three seniors, and $1,500 to one senior from the Horsham area, totaling $3,000 in scholarships.

The club strives to present several scholarships to local students each year, in an effort to assist in furthering the education of community-minded young adults. The students were chosen anonymously, and the choice was made not only on academic merit, but on the level of community and humanitarian involvement the students have displayed. Since beginning the scholarship program, the Horsham Lions Club has presented more than $150,000 in scholarship money to local students.

Mr. Smith received the sole $1,500 scholarship, which was named in memory of Max Hankin (deceased), longtime Horsham entrepreneur and participant in the Lions Club. He and his wife Janet Hankin (also deceased) have helped the Lions in innumerable ways over the years. Without their support and the support of their family, scholarships such as these would not be possible.

Jeffrey Smith attended Lansdale Catholic High School. He’ll be going to Hofstra University this fall, studying theater. Jeff is a very proud Eagle Scout, the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve. He’s been very active in his church youth group, and has lent his time to several charitable organizations. He’s received many honors for leadership and service. Jeff also organized a used-coat drive last winter.

Erica Sokoloski attended Hatboro-Horsham High School, and will be going to Gwynedd Mercy College this fall. She hasn’t yet decided upon a major. She’s also been very active in Key Club in school, and has been an avid dancer since a very young age. Erica has volunteered for things like Relay for Life, a Diabetes walk, and also volunteers at a local retirement home. She has the unique distinction of having a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Jessica Lloyd went to Hatboro-Horsham High School, and will be attending Immaculata College this fall, studying Accounting / Business. Jessica has been very active within Key Club (an extension of the Kiwanis Clubs in high schools). She’s volunteered for many service projects, including Special Olympics, Relay for Life, and in soup kitchens. She did this while maintaining a tremendous GPA

Jenifer Seboek from Life Line Screening came to visit us during our May 7th dinner meeting. She educated the Lions with the basic facts about strokes, common risk factors, and how to prevent them.

Sight Night 2008

Last Halloween, girls from three localGirl Scout troops collected more than candy during Trick-or-Treat.

The troops partnered with the Horsham Lions Club to collect used eyeglasses. The girls handed out flyers to houses in their neighborhoods a week before Halloween. The flyers told the neighbors that the girls will be visiting during Trick-or-Treat on Halloween night to collect eyeglasses.

This is the third year the Horsham Lions Club has partnered with Girl Scouts to collect eyeglasses. This effort is called Sight Night, it's led by the Gift of Sight foundation, and you can learn more by visiting their website: www.SightNight.org.

Each troop accumulated the eyeglasses and gave them to the Horsham Lions Club. The Lions will then have the eyeglasses cleaned, repaired, and redistributed to those in need in developing countries like Guatemala and Haiti.

Representative Tom Murt Visits

During our October 16th meeting, State Representative Tom Murt visited our club.

The representative is running for re-election this fall in the 152nd district. The Lions thank Representative Murt for coming to meet the Lions and exchange ideas.

The representative hopes his prior two years on the job will encourage voters to re-elect him. He's done many things over his short career as elected official, all of which he is very proud of.

His office is the busiest state representative office in the Pennsylvania. He's fought for legislation to help families with Autistic and special-needs children, as well as legislation that helps adults with Autism, Tourettes, and other special needs. He's helped parents fight for funding and services from their local school districts.

He's worked to get several historical markers placed around Hatboro, including bids to erect memorials for Vietnam and Korean War veterans. He's also started a "Visiting Santa" program, where the representative (dressed as Santa Claus!) comes to visit children who may not be able to get to the shopping malls in order to tell Santa their wish lists.

Tom is a local guy, who knows the area very well. He's a teacher. He's also a member of the Army Reserve, and has served in Iraq with his reserve unit. We found him down-to-earth and easy to talk to, and genuinely eager to help his community. We thank him again for the visit.

White Cane Day 2008

Lions White Cane Days are a yearly event aimed at meeting the community, sharing the purpose of the Lions, and raising funds for the blind.

This year we were located outside the Wawa on Route 611 on Saturday, October 4th, from 11am through 3pm.

We met many people from the community, handed out coloring books, pencils, and literature, and raised funds to help the blind in Montgomery County.

Thanks go to Lions Tara Smith, John Bill, John Campisi, Joe Nemath, and Steve Girone for their efforts.

Many thanks also go to Wawa Stores for permitting us to conduct this valuable fundraiser.

Col. Comtois, Willow Grove Air Reserve Station Commander visits club

We were very pleased to welcome Col. Comtois to our club on October 2, 2008. Thanks to Lion Larry Glemser, also of the 111th Fighter Wing, Pa. Air National Guard, who extended the invitation.

The Col. presented an informative slide show to our members, answered questions, and shared stories about the future of the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base. The Col. helped explain that while the base as we currently know it will be changing, and many of these changes have yet to be determined, we will still have an Air Reserve Station.

Also in attendance this night was our neighboring club, the Willow Grove Lion's Club. Upon hearing that the Col. would be available to answer questions at the meeting, President Will Smith of the Willow Grove Club, contact his members to invite them to join us for dinner. It's always nice to host visiting clubs, it was especially nice to see these members again.

Willow Grove Lions Club will be starting a donation collection program, gathering items to be donated to soldiers overseas. Both Larry Glemser and Col. Comtois were able to help direct them on where to get specific questions about their upcoming service project answered. The Horsham Lions Club, as well as other local clubs, will be invited to join in this worthwhile service project.

Thanks to Larry Glemser who initiated this presentation, and thanks also to the entire Willow Grove Club, and especially to Col. Comtois for being our guests.

Todd Stephens Visits

During our September 18th meeting, candidate
Todd Stephens visited our club.

Todd is running for State Representative this fall in the 151st district. The Lions thank Todd for filling in as a guest speaker at the last minute, due to a cancellation.

Todd spoke to us primarily about the fate of the Willow Grove Air Base, which is of great concern to all Horsham residents. He urges us as citizens to fight for our right to have a say in the fate of the property that is in our very backyards.

He also spoke about the importance of legislation and funding for schools and roads, "Education and Transportation", which are clearly very important issues to Todd. He also aims to do his best to reform our government in Harrisburg, and fix many of the activities and habits that have persisted for years yet make no common sense.

Todd is a local guy, born and raised in Horsham. He's personable and friendly, vibrant and witty. We thank him for the visit.

Roh-Max Donates MORE Eyeglasses

Ms. Sciandro received the sole $2,000 scholarship, which was named in memory of Max Hankin (deceased), longtime Horsham entrepreneur and participant in the Lions Club. He and his wife Janet Hankin (also deceased) have helped the Lions in our cause by permitting use of their property to park cars during air shows. Without their support and the support of their family, scholarships such as these would not be possible.

Katie Sciandro attended Hatboro-Horsham High School. She will be attending Syracuse University this fall, studying communications. She wants to be a director after college. She has worked with the television studio at the high school, and belongs to the Interact Club, World Affairs Club, National Honor Society, and Student Council. She was also an editor for the school newspaper. She’s done plenty of volunteer work, including diabetes walks, Relay for Life, and Adopt a Family. She also tutored elementary students in math.

Dana Farrell also attended Hatboro-Horsham High School. She plans on attending Temple University this fall, studying communications as well. She wants to work in a news studio someday. Dana had a childhood illness which forced her to work harder than many other kids. Her determination is commendable. She’s been very involved in school activities, including the student advisory board, school musicals, theater club, and Interact Club. She also participates with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Future Business Leaders of America.

Dan Murphy attended LaSalle College High School. He’ll be attending Pitt this fall, studying civil engineering. He’s studied at engineering camp at Drexel and has already interned at a civil engineering firm. He wants to work for a firm which focuses on the environment, and also wants to take his expertise to Bolivia to provide engineering assistance someday. Dan has worked with special needs children and the homeless for a long time. He’s also volunteered for the Special Olympics and several homeless shelters. He’s been on student council, National Honor Society, president of the History Club, and attended leadership camps.

Brittany Schlorff attended Hatboro-Horsham High School, and will be attending Bucknell University in preparation for medical school. She wants to be a resident doctor at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and eventually become a pediatrician. She’s volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, and is also very active in her church. Brittany also had to fight a childhood illness in order to succeed. She’s very involved with softball, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and is also a senior mentor. All while maintaining top-notch grades in school.

Abington High School Guest Speakers

At our April 17th meeting we had two guest speakers from Abington High School, Mary Rodgers and Jennifer Parke.

Mary Rodgers (right) has been working with students, getting them involved in service to the community since 1968. She is currently the Service Learning Facilitator at Abington High School. She’s been a past Leo advisor, is a current member of the Glenside Lions Club, and also volunteers with VOSH, an organization the Lions know too well. She was voted the top service learning practitioner in the US in 2008.

Mary’s role involves working with students to get them involved with community service activities. The high school requires community service hours in order to graduate, and Mary helps the students choose projects, plan them, see them through, and also helps them realize that service need not be something you “have to do”, it’s something you’re likely to derive some self satisfaction from.

Mary came to visit us primarily to tell us of her recent visit to Guatemala to assist VOSH in a humanitarian trip delivering needed eye care to local inhabitants.

Jennifer Parke (left) is a senior at Abington Senior High School. She also visited Guatemala with Mary to help VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity). She helped bring needed vision supplies to the country, and also served as a translator, having taken several years of Spanish language education in school.

She witnessed and assisted in numerous cataract surgeries, and worked one-on-one with vision-impaired Guatemalans in several towns. Before traveling, she also assisted in sorting, cataloguing, cleaning, and repairing some of the 4,000 pair of eyeglasses that VOSH brought to Guatemala during this trip.

Together, along with VOSH, Jennifer and Mary helped treat 2,500 people, dispensing several hundred pair of eyeglasses, and assisting in 99 cataract surgeries. They were both also responsible for carrying over 50 pounds of gear apiece. Here at home, they helped process over 10,000 pair of eyeglasses just last year. Those of you who missed the meeting missed a great opportunity to meet two people doing tremendous things to help preserve eyesight. The stories these two ladies told were both riveting and also humorous at times, but always inspirational. Both ladies were also very well spoken and vibrant. You can’t inspire others without those qualities!

Jennifer’s trip so touched her, that she has changed her declared college major course of study, and now wishes to become an eye doctor.

The Horsham Lions extends both ladies congratulations for their efforts, and encouragement to continue!

Do You Know About LCIF?

At our February 21st meeting, Past District Governor Jack Binstead came to visit, and speak about LCIF. The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is set up as the philanthropy arm of Lions Clubs International.

Causes that have been donated to by LCIF include tsunami relief, hurricane relief (ex: Katrina), earthquake relief, as well as many causes domestically, including flood relief within Pennsylvania.

So far, LCIF has donated over $12 million to tsunami relief. Over the course of the next ten years, this figure is estimated to reach over $60 million. 100% of LCIF donations reach their intended causes. The reasons for this are twofold. First, other charities like the Red Cross must pay their workers. All LCIF workers are volunteers, and are never paid. Second, all operating expenses for the LCIF organization are paid through dues, never through donations given to LCIF. Other charities like the Red Cross cannot say the same.

In Indonesia alone, LCIF has funded the construction of over 3,000 homes for those devastated by the tsunami.

LCIF's contributions to causes within Pennsylvania more than double what Pennsylvania Lions Clubs donate to LCIF. PDG Binstead urged us and all Lions Clubs to contribute to the LCIF cause. When contributing to LCIF, you can earmark your donations for specific causes, like tsunami or Katrina relief.

Girl Scouts Collect Eyeglasses

On Halloween, girls from nine Brownie Girl Scout troops collected more than candy during Trick-or-Treat.

This is the second year the Horsham Lions Club has partnered with Girl Scouts to collect eyeglasses. This effort is called Sight Night, it's led by the Gift of Sight foundation, and you can learn more by visiting their website: www.SightNight.org.

Proud To Be A Lion

This letter comes from Mr. John Campisi, who has been a member of the Horsham Lions Club for more than 25 years.

It was a sunny day, when while cleaning out my car, I was approached by my neighbor, John Bill. He asked me if I was interested in joining the Horsham Lions Club. I then asked him what they do, and he said the Lions run events to raise funds to help the blind, needy families, handicapped persons, and others. I told him I was interested and would let him know. My past has been with the Knights of Columbus where we also prepared dinners for the needy.
After attending the Lions dinner meeting, which I enjoyed, I decided to join the organization. Around a year later, I was helping John Bill deliver boxes of food to needy families. I found that members were giving their best to put together different events to raise money. In doing so, we were also socializing with each other and our spouses and families through events such as scholarship dinner night. It was great.
Our meetings are held at Williamsons Restaurant the first and third Thursday of each month. If, by chance, there are others out there who feel like I do, why not join the organization and give a little time and effort to those who are in need?
It has been more than 25 years now that I have been helping others through my work with the Horsham Lions Club. They awarded me with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, which is the highest award one can get. Believe me, I cried.
The Horsham Lions have several fundraising events such as a golf outing at Commonwealth National Golf Club, and a collection on White Cane Day. We also park cars during the annual Willow Grove air show, and hold events to benefit the Little League, drug abuse awareness, Wills Eye Hospital, and youth outreach programs.
There's an old saying: "Me, Myself, and I." I only wish that there was a way we could each do three times as much as we do now . I could go on and on about what the Horsham Lions Club does. Again, I am proud to be a small part of what the organization has done and will continue to do.
If you are not able to join our organization, or to help out in any way, a prayer for us would be appreciated. God bless you, and may you stay healthy.

Used Coat Drive

What do you do with your old coats that you don't use any longer? If you're like most of us, they stay in your closet, or get moved to your attic, and are never seen again.

Why not donate them? The One Warm Coat organization is holding a used coat drive right now. If you'd like to donate your used coats, just contact us, we'll arrange for pickup and make sure they get to the people that need them.

Meet our Scholarhip Recipients!

In July 2007, the Horsham Lions Club presented $1,000 scholarships to three seniors, and $2,000 to one senior from the Hatboro Horsham High School, totaling $5,000 in scholarships.

The club strives to present several scholarships to local students each year, in an effort to assist in furthering the education of community-minded young adults. The students were chosen anonymously, and the choice was made not only on academic merit, but on the level of community and humanitarian involvement the students displayed. Since beginning the scholarship program, the Horsham Lions Club has presented more than $135,000 in scholarship money to local students.

Kaitlyn Doherty (above, center) will be majoring in Fashion Design this fall. She’s been the president of the Future Business Leaders of America chapter in Hatboro Horsham High School. She’s also served on the Student Advisory Board, and been inducted into the National Honor Society and the National Art Society. She’s been active with Field Hockey throughout her high school career. Kaitlyn has volunteered for the Food Bank, Juvenile Diabetes, American Cancer Society, and helped make handmade blankets for hospitalized children.

William Rech (above, left) will be attending Penn State this fall, majoring in Accounting/Finance. He also was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council. He was in the Math Club and the Class Advisory Board. Bill has been very active in sports, including golf, basketball, track, and volleyball. He volunteered at the St. Catherine’s Carnival, as well as a Lions fundraiser. He’s been a track official for a Kiwanis track meet, and has attended a Rotary leadership camp.

Anthony Visconte (above, right) will be attending West Chester University this fall, majoring in Music Education. He’s a dedicated musician who wishes to bring the joy of music to all. During high school, he was involved in basketball and tennis. He’s been on the Student Advisory Board, Student Council, and has also been a senior mentor. He was involved in symphonic band, concert band, and choir. He’s volunteered with the St. Catherine’s music ministry as well as their Vacation Bible School program.

Colleen Cunningham (below) will be attending Gwynedd Mercy College or Drexel University this fall, majoring in Nursing. She’s president of the Key Club, a community service organization, at the high school. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society and the Future Business Leaders of America. She’s been active in her church youth group, and has been taking dancing classes for 13 years.

Remembering Leonard Ferguson

Leonard Ferguson, a long-time former member of the Horsham Lions Club, passed on July 11th in Burlington, NC at age 87. Leonard left Horsham in 1982 when he retired to North Carolina. Leonard was born in Hastings, Nebraska. He was an accomplished piano player. He was married for close to 70 years to his wife Riva.

Leonard received a Masters degree in History from University of Nebraska 1948. That same year, he moved his family to Philadelphia, and entered the PhD program for History at the University of Pennsylvania.

Shortly after that, he left the PhD program to become executive director of what is now known as the College Settlement Camp in Horsham. He remained director until 1982, for a total of 34 years.

The College Settlement Camp offers overnight camping for economically needy children from the five county Philadelphia region. It also has a day-camp, which serves kids from targeted schools in Philadelphia. His influence on the camps and on Horsham is immeasurable.

Leonard has been a member of Lions clubs, the Monarch Club of Philadelphia, the American Camping Association, and the Upper Dublin Friends Meeting association.

Since retiring to North Carolina, he remained active in Lions as well as in the Masonic Temple. His wife Riva passed in April 2006. He later moved to a retirement community, where he was in constant demand to perform on the piano for his friends and neighbors.

A memorial service in Horsham is planned but not announced. Details to come.

Please let Andy Weiss know if you’d like to contact his son via email. Not a week after his passing, his son felt it necessary to inform the Lions; and he has been gone from Horsham for 25 years. We’re flattered that his fondness of our club has remained so strong for so long.

Andy Weiss receives Melvin Jones Fellowship

On Thursday, June 21, 2007, Andy Weiss received the Melvin Jones Fellowship in recognition of his commitment to humanitarian work.

This fellowship is the foundation's highest honor and represents humanitarian qualities such as generosity, compassion, and concern for the less fortunate.

Melvin Jones Fellows receive a lapel pin and a personalized wall plaque in honor of their commitment to helping others.

Andy has done an outstanding job serving as president for the Horsham Lions for the past three years. We congratulate him in this important recognition of his dedication to our community.

Horsham Day Fundraiser

Another Horsham Day has come and gone! The Horsham Lions sold roast pork sandwiches, home made ice cream, bottled water, and canned sodas as a fundraiser during Horsham Day. The weather was hot, which helped us sell the drinks and ice cream faster than ever before. Whereas last year we were giving away left over pork and ice cream, this year we sold out long before the fireworks began.

Many thanks to the Lions and friends who came to help out: John Bill, Joe Nemath, Carlo Logiovine, Elena Logiovine, Tara Smith, Ted Truver, Shirley Truver, Fred Stewart, Phil Amoa, and Lauren Kraske. Special thanks go again to Lion Sam Braccia for donating our roast pig, and to Ivan Stoltzfus for coming all the way from Lancaster to make our ice cream.

Thanks also go to Williamson's restaurant for donating ice, and to Lion Larry Glemser for the use of his pickup truck.

Your efforts helped us raise money that will be used throughout the year to help the vision and hearing impaired in our community!

Janet Hankin

It is with heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Mrs. Janet Hankin, long-time friend of the Horsham Lions Club. Mrs. Hankin’s contributions to the Horsham Lions, some intangible, some monetary, are innumerable. We have truly lost a gem.

In 2004 the Horsham Lions awarded her their highest honor, by giving her the Melvin Jones Fellowship. This award is only given to those individuals whom Lions hold in high esteem and have contributed selflessly to helping others.

Several Horsham Lions have been family friends of the Hankins over the years. Carlo Logiovine represented the Horsham Lions at the funeral service and at her daughter Minna’s home following the service.

For many years the Lions have been running a fundraiser by parking cars on Mrs. Hankin’s property during the local Air Show events. This generosity has helped us raise tens of thousands of dollars over the years, all of which she was thrilled to see given to those in need.

As if that were not enough, her most recent generous donation to the Horsham Lions even further enabled us to assist those in need.

A scholarship in her name has been created. Each year the Horsham Lions grants a scholarship bearing her name to a deserving Hatboro Horsham High School senior who shows outstanding service-oriented qualities.

She will be sorely missed.

Simmons Spring Fair

The Horsham Lions Club was on hand at Simmons Elementary's Spring Fair on May 12th. The fair is held each year to raise funds for the Home & School Association. The Lions were there to meet the community and try to drum up interest in Lionism.

Lions Tara Smith, Ted and Shirley Truver, John Bill and Andy Weiss helped staff our table, where we handed out pencils to the children and Lions literature to the adults. Tara's daughter, Becky, came to help out as well. Becky received a scholarship from the Horsham Lions back in 2005.

Roger Weiss, a vision-impaired friend of the Horsham Lions, was also on hand. The cost of raising and training his Leader Dog, Layla, was partially funded by the Horsham Lions. Roger and Layla gave the children a chance to learn about Leader Dogs and about people with vision impairment.

Horsham Lions Visit Sunrise Assisted Living

On October 5th the Horsham Lions visited Sunrise Assisted Living of Dresher. We established a connection with Sharon Damsker, director of community relations for Sunrise of Dresher, earlier this year at a fundraiser they held for the Lions. We hope this connection grows stronger!

During the visit, we were given a tour of their new Low Vision resident rooms. These rooms are specially designed for people with vision impairment, to give them a better quality of life without robbing them of dignity. The Lions were very impressed with this program.

Several District 14-R members were also on hand, including District Governor Dick Stein, Vice District Governor Joanne George, and PDG Jack Binstead. All were very interested in fostering a partnership between Sunrise and the Lions.

During the meeting, District Governor Stein inducted our newest member to the Horsham Lions Club, Pat McDevitt.

Sunrise of Dresher’s first resident was a happy and friendly chocolate lab named Duncan, who begged for treats throughout the whole meeting! Thanks go to Lion John Campisi for bringing hoagies for our dinners.

Members of the district will be following up with Sunrise in the coming months, to discuss joint ventures to raise funds for the blind and increase awareness of Sunrise’s new Low Vision program.

White Cane Days

This year's White Cane Days was a tremendous success. We raised significant funds to help the blind in our area, and also got to meet members of our community!

VOSH-PA Visits Horsham Lions

At our September 21st meeting the Horsham Lions hosted members of VOSH-PA. Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity is an international organization whose goal is to provide vision care worldwide to those who can neither afford nor obtain such care. The VOSH-PA chapter was founded by several local optometrists, in an effort to do their part to address blindness.

Three members of VOSH-PA visited us. The members make trips several times a year to places like Guatemala and Haiti to deliver eye-care and glasses to the needy. The trips are funded out of the pockets of the members themselves, all hotel and airfare is the responsibility of the member. While on a mission, the members give eye exams, perform cataract surgery, and distribute eyeglasses to locals with vision problems. District 14-R donates thousands of pairs of eyeglasses to VOSH yearly.

Chris Wurst (left) is a local Hatboro business owner. He lends his time and effort to the cause, and stores the VOSH-PA equipment and eyeglasses in his Hatboro warehouse. He also assists the physicians during the trips. Christine Smith (middle) is an optometrist in Doylestown. David McPhillips (right) is also an optometrist, located in Horsham.

Christine gave us a slide presentation containing many photos taken during VOSH visits to needy villages. The photos showed how communities for miles around send people to the temporary vision centers for care. Pictures of young children, able to see clearly for the first time after receiving donated eyewear, were stirring and inspiring.

We also learned that VOSH collects donated baseball hats in addition to glasses. The hats help shield the eyes of those living in the lower latitudes, where the suns rays can damage eyesight much more quickly than they can more northward. The Horsham Lions gave 220 pairs of eyeglasses to VOSH-PA during their visit. Many of these will be going with the team as they visit Haiti in several weeks.

Meet our Scholarhip Recipients!

In July 2006, the Horsham Lions Club presented $1,000 scholarships to three seniors, and $2,000 to one senior from the Hatboro Horsham High School, totaling $5,000 in scholarships.

The club strives to present several scholarships to local students each year, in an effort to assist in furthering the education of community-minded young adults. The students were chosen anonymously, and the choice was made not only on academic merit, but on the level of community and humanitarian involvement the students displayed. Since beginning the scholarship program, the Horsham Lions Club has presented more than $130,000 in scholarship money to local students.

Bruce McCaffrey (below) will be attending Drexel University this fall, studying Civil Engineering. He’s participated in many extra curricular activities, as well as being employed as an apprentice at McCaffrey Fuel Oil for many years. He’s acquired a wide range of skills, including welding, plumbing, and HVAC systems. Bruce is also a volunteer for our local fire company. He also has been involved in Boy Scouts for many years, and is currently an Eagle Scout, the highest rank that a Boy Scout can achieve. Bruce is the second child in the McCaffrey family to have received a scholarship from the Horsham Lions.

Sarah Klein (below) will be attending Messiah College this fall, studying German Education and Music Education. She was involved in band and SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). Sarah has been highly active in Girl Scouts for many years, and has been an assistant to club president Andy Weiss’s wife (Suzanne), who leads two Girl Scout troops.

Jennifer O’Neill (below) will be attending Penn State this fall, studying Business Administration. She is very active in Track, Student Council, and many other high school committees. Her community service includes Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Breakfast with Santa, along with several other ventures. She’s spending the summer in Europe visiting many countries.

Chelsea Pessolano (below) will be attending Albright college this fall, her major has yet to be declared. She’s been active in the Student Advisory Board as well as the Interact and Key Clubs, and Youth Leadership. She’s been cheerleading throughout high school. She was sent to a Leadership Skills camp by the Horsham Rotary. Chelsea also participated in the Big Brothers and Sisters organization, as well as volunteering for Horsham Day and Habitat for Humanity.

Mr. McCaffrey received the sole $2,000 scholarship, which was named in memory of Max Hankin, longtime Horsham entrepreneur and participant in the Lions Club. His widow Janet still helps the Lions in our cause by permitting use of her property to park cars during air shows. Without Mrs. Hankin's support, and the hard work of our members during fundraisers, scholarships such as these would not be possible.

Sunrise Assisted Living

Pictured standing (L to R) is Christen Egan, Sharon Damsker, and Ed Corbeil We were contacted very recently by Sharon Damsker, director of community relations for Sunrise Assisted Living in Dresher. Their new facility has opened recently, and is starting to accept new residents.

The Sunrise home in Dresher is pioneering a new program, named Bradford View. These assisted living apartments are customized for seniors with low vision. Great detail has been given to the choice of fabrics, colors, layout, and design of these apartments, so that residents with low vision can enjoy a better quality of life. Staff and care managers are specially trained to assist residents with low vision. Activities are also tailored to meet these residents’ special needs. Vision specialists were consulted to make this program unique and beneficial.

Sharon and her team would like to make this new program known to the community, and chose to help spread the message by contacting the Horsham Lions club. In addition, being an organization which strives to encourage and support service organizations such as the Lions, Sunrise has several partnership ideas which we are going to be working on together.

(1) Sunrise is going to be placing eyeglass collection boxes in all of their facilities in this region. There are currently 14 of these homes, and more are on the way. The eyeglasses will be collected and donated to the Lions Club in each home’s region. We will help put them in contact with the proper clubs.

(2) Sunrise of Dresher held a fundraiser for the Lions Club on August 24th at the Garden Golf center on Upper State Road in North Wales. Sunrise did this to increase exposure for the Lions, as well as increasing awareness of their new low-vision apartments. We got to meet and speak with Sharon and other Sunrise staff, and learned quite a bit about the Bradford View program. In addition, Sunrise donated 50 pair of eyeglasses to our club.

(3) Sunrise will be hosting one of our meetings in the near future. We will get to meet the staff and tour the facility. Look for information in upcoming newsletters.

(4) Sunrise of Dresher has expressed interest in starting a new branch club of the Horsham Lions in their location. As you may know, branch clubs are an excellent way to increase membership and keep Lionism strong.

CapMark (formerly GMAC) Donate Eyeglasses

CapMark (formerly GMAC Commercial Mortgage) has once again donated a significant number of eyeglasses to the Horsham Lions Club. A total of *68* eyeglasses have been donated this time. This brings their grand total to over 150 eyeglasses.

Air Show Parking - June 17th & 18th 2006

Words cannot describe how pleased I am with this year's Air Show fundraiser.

Without a doubt we took in more proceeds than ever before. We parked close to 1,700 vehicles over the course of two days, and sold close to 600 drinks.

Many, many thanks go to three volunteers from the Special Equestrians organization. A heartfelt thanks also goes to Ms. Susan Glover from a local Girl Scout troop for volunteering as well.

The largest thanks of all goes to Mrs. Janet Hankin, who once again graciously permitted the Horsham Lions to park cars on her property. Mrs. Hankin has always been a tremendous asset to the Lions, and we thank her dearly.

Three New Club Members!

Three new Horsham Lions Club members were inducted on June 15th!

The new members (all ladies!) were inducted by Past District Governor Jack Bittig. A fourth new member, Patrick McDevitt, will be inducted shortly. Mr. Bittig also installed this year's batch of officers for the club.

For the first time we conducted TWO fundraisers at the same time. We sold roast pork sandwiches under the big tent, and we also sold homemade ice cream along the perimeter. The rain put quite a damper on the turnout, and we certainly would have done better had it been sunny.

Many thanks go to all the Lions who came out to help, as well as to Mr. Ivan Stoltzfus, the Amish gentleman who made all our ice cream.

Although we did not break any fundraising records, we certainly got a great opportunity to meet the community again and rub elbows.

Katrina and Tsunami Relief

Did you know that Lions Clubs have contributed $20 million toward the recovery efforts for Tsunami victims and those affected by hurricane Katrina?

You probably did not, likely because Lions feel that "tooting our own horn" isn't as important as getting the job done. I've got a problem with this attitude. No, there's really no need to buy commercial airtime just to advertise our deeds, but we should be proud nonetheless, and we should show that pride so that we can attract new members. Without letting the community know about our actions, how can they feel good contributing to our organization, either with their time or their money?

And so, I recommend you read the two stories linked to below. Remember, Lions Clubs are the largest service organization worldwide. Larger than Kiwanis. Larger than Rotary. We have every reason to be proud of our efforts.

Maybe reading the stories below will encourage you to learn more about us. If so, we welcome you to contact us or show up at a meeting.

Joint Meeting

The Horsham Lions Club hosted the Willow Grove Lions Club during our February 16th meeting. The joint meeting was aimed at discussing the possibility of merging our two clubs into one.

The mood of the evening was absolutely electric. About twelve members of the Willow Grove Club and about ten members of the Horsham Club broke bread together, shared ideas and opinions, made new friends, and renewed old friendships.

Many Lions voiced their opinions about the potential merger. The clubs each agreed to take a vote during their next meeting, to give all members time to consider the idea, and to give all members a chance to vote. Club presidents will communicate with each other to determine the next step to take.

Benches are in Place!

Our two new blue benches are now proudly placed immediately outside the Horsham Township Community Center building!

These benches have been donated by the Horsham Lions Club in memory of Lion Sal Calise. We will be affixing memorial plaques to each of them.

A very generous benefactor who would like to remain anonymous has donated $700 toward the purchase of these new fixtures.
